REGEMAC is the process that converts any binder resulting from a partial recycling of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) - through the regeneration of the aged bitumen – into a modified and elastomeric binder. Similarly to REGEFALT, REGEMAC enables the highest hot recycling rate allowed by asphalt plants.

Role and action of REGEMAC

REGEMAC enables the largest addition of aged asphalt within the asphalt produced. Most hot mix plants currently available cannot recycle more than 50%, due to their heat transmission process. The new generation of plants being more efficient in this respect, this rate will be increased up to 60/65%, with a very high level of quality for the asphalt obtained.
Simultaneous to the irreversible chemical process of reduction on the oxidized components included in aged bitumen, REGEMAC develops inter and intermolecular reactions of reticulation. The additives also facilitate the interpenetration of old and new particles, and leads to a harmonious integration of the components of the new bitumen. The morphology of the aged bitumen gets modified: elastic bitumen is then created, resulting from the action of the additive; they have all the characteristics of industrial elastomeric bitumen chemically modified.

Based on the characteristics of the aged bitumen, the recycling rate desired, and the availability of new bitumen, REGEMAC will enable to reproduce on site the whole range of penetration of chemically modified binders, by giving them a standard or a high elastic characteristic.

In some cases, the addition of a flux will be required, particularly for low penetration rate of the aged bitumen, and depending of the desired recycling rate.

Implementation of REGEMAC


Two specifications are available: REGEMAC RCn and REGEMAC RCs.


REGEMAC RCn for obtaining standard elastomeric bitumen.

REGEMAC RCs for obtaining very elastic binders.


REGEMAC additives are in the form of small granules, made for being integrated within the two bitumen  (aged and new) which, through the hot mixing process, lead to the final reconstituted binder.

Characteristics of the added binder

The added bitumen to be used with REGEMAC is a conventional one. The choice of its grade will depend of the required characteristics of the reconstituted binder, taking into account those of the aged bitumen, and also its recycling rate.

Notice of use

REGEMAC can be introduced:

  • either in the mixer when aged asphalt (RAP) mixes with new hot aggregates, and new bitumen is added
  • or in the flow of aged asphalt (RAP) which gets into the dryer drum mixer.

Heat conditions with REGEMAC

The REGEMAC process requires a minimum coating temperature of 160°C, preferably 170°C! If required by the construction site, a higher temperature (180/190°C) can be used.

Quantity of REGEMAC to be user

With REGEMAC RCn et RCs, the quantity of additive to be added (Q) is directly linked to the bitumen content rate of the recycled asphalt produced.
